As you may already know, Update Rollup 7 was the last major update for Microsoft Dynamics CRM. It brought significant changes to Dynamics CRM 4.0 and the CRM Outlook Client. In addition, it can be considered the “gold standard” for a new CRM deployment going forward.

Make sure all your CRM deployments are at the very least up to speed with Update Rollup 7 for two very good reasons: better performance, and compatibility with future updates.

After a quick scan of the list of fixes, it appears this release only adds stability improvements on top of what was Update Rollup 7′s big changes. Update Rollup 7 is not a pre-requisite. You can install UR8 on any server deployment of CRM 4.0 because it’s a cumulative update. Easy! However, you should make sure to to review the import and export customization file notes.

EDIT: The Outlook Client and Data Migration Manager both require Update Rollup 7 to be installed beforehand.

According to this Gartner press release, the worldwide market for CRM solutions has grown 12.5% since last year in 2007. Looks like there’s now solid evidence businesses are catching on to the benefits of a CRM solution… or even better, xRM.

But one of the highlights of this story is that Microsoft Dynamics CRM revenue grew 75% last year. Much of the success was attributed to the trend in SaaS, with the likes of Microsoft CRM Online and Salesforce.com.

Software as a Service (SaaS) continued to drive the market forward, representing nearly 20 percent of total CRM software market revenue in 2008, up from just over 15 percent in 2007. Interest in social networking and social software also escalated in 2008 as businesses were confronted with the sales, marketing, and serviceability impact of increasing consumer participation in online forums.

SAP continued to be the market leader accounting for 22.5 percent of worldwide CRM software revenue in 2008 (see Table 1), but this is down from a 25.5 percent share in 2007. Microsoft experienced the strongest growth rate among the top 5 vendors, as its revenue increased 75 percent in 2008.

I’ve been busy on a couple projects lately, so I’m predicting there will only be more in the near future! Let me know if you’ve personally seen more CRM business too.

After my RC1 installation, it required a reboot. At first impression, browsing websites really do seem a bit snappier than IE8 Beta.

More importantly though… as a Microsoft CRM Consultant, I’m wondering if the previous IE Beta issue with workflows has been addressed. I haven’t yet had time to test its compatibility with CRM, so be sure to post your findings in the comment section!

The binaries and full fix information are available at the links below.

KB Article Summary: Update Rollup 2 for Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 (KB 959419) [Microsoft.com]

Download Link: Update Rollup 2 for Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 (KB 959419) [Microsoft.com]

Some things to note:

The Update Rollup 2 is a cumulative fix from Update Rollup 1. No need to hold onto Update Rollup 1 files anymore, unless you’re oddly nostalgic.

Be careful with importing and exporting customizations to or from CRM systems that have different Update Rollup versions.

Some fixes need to be configured manually.

The Dynamics CRM Team Blog comments on a future Update Rollup schedule:

The CRM SE team is planning to release Update Rollups on 8-week cycles; therefore, Update Rollup 3 is scheduled for mid-March. While quality is the focus of every release, we are also trying to be predictable in our release schedule so that our customers can schedule deployments of our Update Rollups with confidence. In November, when we released Update Rollup 1, we set the date of Update Rollup 2 to January 15th and we met this timeframe. We will do our best to establish a release rhythm that our customers can come to depend on.

In the past, many CRM developers have created their own web part by modifying the v3.0 version or by other means, which Microsoft would instantly label as an “unsupported solution”. Fret no more! The supported Microsoft solution can be downloaded at the link below. It is easy to install and easy to configure.

Finally, check out the below screenshots for the full range of options that you get with this List Web Part.

Release Notes:

This is release 1 of 3 for the Analytics Accelerator for Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0. The following future releases are going through final testing and packaging and will be available soon:

R2 delivers SQL Server 2008 dashboards as well as Sales Pipeline trending capabilities

R3 delivers more advanced SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) capabilities as well as Microsoft Office PerformancePoint Server scorecards

Many customers and partners will be familiar with Analytics Foundation for Microsoft Dynamics CRM 3.0 which was a business intelligence feature pack for Microsoft Dynamics CRM 3.0. Analytics Foundation for Dynamics CRM 3.0 included Dashboards, Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) and a suite of new reports. Analytics Accelerator for Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 (R1) expands on this, and is designed to support a range of business intelligence “maturity” levels for customers and partners. The Analytics accelerator has been built to cater for differing business intelligence skill-sets and experience levels.
